The region is also home to rare endemic species of flora and fauna, much of it in UNESCO preserved nature reserves, and a number of small uninhabited islands blessed by beautiful untouched beaches. Here another main road, the Carretera Central, continues to Santiago de Cuba in the east, giving plenty of opportunity to see the many authentic sights of the region. It is characterized by rolling landscapes, typical thatched huts (\u2018bohios\u2019), ox-drawn ploughs, dramatic mountains, and picturesque colonial towns, which are home to many architectural reminders of Cuba\u2019s rich past.
